It’s summer time! If you’re heading to the beach (or even just spending time outdoors), make sure to prevent sunburns in the first place, but also know what to do to treat one.
If you acquired sunburn after long exposure to harmful UV rays, it is important to treat it as soon as you notice it.
Here are some tips from doctor @thittrando to help relieve any discomfort from having sunburn:
1. Hydrate. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration caused by sunburn.
2. Anti-inflammatory. Take oral NSAIDS, such as aspirin, indomethacin, or Motrin AND apply topical steroids (i.e. cortisone) 2 to 3 times per day.
3. Moisturize. Use soothing topical emollients.
Dr. Thi Tran encourages use of sunscreen, protective clothing and to seek shades not only to prevent sunburns, but to also avoid premature aging, wrinkling of the skin, and ultimately – skin cancer.
Don’t forget, prevention is key! However, if sunburn is sustained, remember HAM — hydrate, anti-inflammatory, and moisturize.
